The Lazy Girl’s Guide to Which Shoes Go with What Outfit

All right. We’ll admit it. Back in the day when our founder, Jasmine, was in the dating pool she used to eyeball a gentleman’s shoes and make her decision about whether or not she’d date him from them. We know. Quick thinking. Maybe shallow. But nevertheless true.

In her defense, as we already explored in this blog post called “University of Kansas Study: Shoes Tip Off Others To Your Personality,” you can tell a lot about someone by their shoe choices.

So we’ve got your back. Stick with us, kid, and you won’t be on the “she’s really cute except for her goofy-ass shoes” list. Just check out this pin below from Pinterest.

Want a Better Job? It’s 65% Likely It Comes Down to Your Outfit

According to PINK, the number one online resource for America’s more than 70 million women who work:

A whopping 65 percent of hiring managers admit clothes could be the deciding factor between two similar candidates.

That’s crazy but factual nevertheless. Now, if you’ve been a faithful Ruby follower, you know that we’ve already created eHow.com videos teaching you some of the basics on “How to Dress for a Job in Your 20s” here.

But we’ve also created a handy cheat sheet called “Pieces Every Woman Should Own” on Pinterest.

If your wardrobe is stocked up with those basics, putting them together for an interview is a piece of cake.

Here’s our recommendation for the best pieces to mix and match and remember, these quick tips if you’re not a visual person:

  • Dress up not down.
  • Conservative hosiery (no runs!).
  • No purses; carry a briefcase instead.
  • Modest nail polish.
  • Natural-looking make up.
  • One, simple set of earrings.

Frugal Friday: We’ll Teach You How to Bargain Hunt in 5 Minutes or Less

Recently the Ruby, Inc. crew polled our clients and asked them how we could improve. If you’d like to give us feedback, we welcome it and you can fill out a quick 30-second survey below.

Here’s a little bit of feedback that we received so far:

“I believe that you take each client as an individual and address their needs. I think your attitude is always positive which really helps when the client has low self esteem which is most of the time. You also have a clear knowledge of how to do things in a cost effective way and that means a lot to the client who is on a tight budge but wants to look their best.”

And here’s a suggestion for improvement:

Post places in a newsletter for past clients when you find new places to shop at a bargain place.”

You asked, we listened.

Welcome to Frugal Friday! Each Friday we’ll scour the web and the local community to find out where you can find killer pieces at a stellar price.

So today we’re going to introduce you to Threadflip.

Threadflip is building a social marketplace that changes the way women shop for clothes and style their wardrobes, creating a peer-to-peer shopping experience that is delightful, collaborative and inspirational, as well as efficient and cost-effective. It’s an $8.1 million dollar VC backed company that allows you to shop tons of clothes from vintage to Vuitton at deep discounts. It’s a chance to turn your closet into a dynamic boutique.

Frustrated? See How Easily You Can Build Self-Confidence in This New Way

Do you wish when you were getting dressed you could find clothes that fit your individual shape and had a sounding board to talk with a friend who would listen to your needs and help you find a workaround for it? Our founder, Jasmine, had that very conundrum and it turns out, she learned she wasn’t alone.

We figured, as entrepreneurs, we could tackle this head on and so we created a custom solution to address it.

If you want to learn how you can easily build self-confidence like our customers, we’ve got 10 quick tips to ensure your success.

1) Know who you are. Think about your age, your occupation and your lifestyle.
2) Look for inspiration. Try our Pinterest page here to help brainstorm and see if you prefer a classic style, a bohemian style, a minimalist style, high fashion, or street style.
3) Know what you want to accomplish. Do you want to thin out your wardrobe? Dress for a special event or revamp your entire wardrobe. Know what you want.
4) Know your body shape.
5) Assess your current wardrobe.
6) Make a few necessary changes.
7) Stock up on wardrobe essentials. Not sure what they are? See our Pinterest page here.

Unsure of the process? Wish your friends had tried it first. They have and here’s what they’re saying:

“I believe that you take each client as an individual and address their needs. I think your attitude is always positive which really helps when the client has low self esteem which is most of the time. You also have a clear knowledge of how to do things in a cost effective way and that means alot to the client who is on a tight budge but wants to look their best.”

“I was very pleased with the support Ruby, Inc. gave to me and the information Jasmine, the founder, provided me with. I will always think of her moto “there’s just not enough fabric” and I have told that to many of my friends. It was nice knowing what she recommended would look the best on my body because some things I wouldn’t have picked up otherwise. Also, that since I am a larger size looking in the plus size pants have been helpful.”

“Jasmine is extremely knowledgeable about her business, Ruby, Inc. I learned a great deal about dressing properly for my body type which has increased my confidence. In addition, I was able to donate clothing and clean out my closet!!!”

Give Us 5 Minutes and We’ll Teach You How to Style the Boyfriend Jean

What kind of luck have you had styling the boyfriend jean? Not sure what it is? They’re the antithesis of skinny jeans. Instead of being tight, they are loose and relaxed, like wearing guys’ jeans. They look great on just about everyone and right now it’s popular to wear with a rolled cuff for a cropped look. Quick tip: They all look similar, but not all boyfriend jeans will fit you the same way. Some have a dropped crotch, while others come pre-worn and ripped. Remember to focus on your body type first and not just get caught up in the trend of the moment.

We found a couple of photos on Pinterest to best illustrate how to wear them right now and if you’d like some one-on-one help, click here and we’ll walk you through it.

How to Take a Small Business and Make a Huge Difference

Have you every heard the story about the starfish?

Now we’re not sure where this story originated but we’re attributing it to Andrew: Inside & Insights.

It goes:

While walking along a beach, an elderly gentleman saw someone in the distance leaning down, picking something up and throwing it into the ocean.

As he got closer, he noticed that the figure was that of a young man, picking up starfish one by one and tossing each one gently back into the water.

He came closer still and called out, “Good morning! May I ask what it is that you are doing?”

The young man paused, looked up, and replied “Throwing starfish into the ocean.”

The old man smiled, and said, “I must ask, then, why are you throwing starfish into the ocean?”

To this, the young man replied, “The sun is up and the tide is going out. If I don’t throw them in, they’ll die.”

Upon hearing this, the elderly observer commented, “But, young man, do you not realize that there are miles and miles of beach and there are starfish all along every mile? You can’t possibly make a difference!”

The young man listened politely. Then he bent down, picked up another starfish, threw it into the back into the ocean past the breaking waves and said, It made a difference for that one.

We decided to take that idea and apply it to everything we do at Ruby, Inc. So here’s a behind-the-scenes sneak peek at what we’ve been building for the past year.

For the past year, whenever our clients request a closet editing, which is where a personal stylist reviews our clients’ wardrobe and decides what to purge, what to have tailored and where they’ll need to splurge, their unneeded items have been donated to local charities or to Threadflip where they will be sold and the proceeds will be donated to style women in need.

Ruby, Inc. then partnered with That Shuu Girl Boutique and the owner, Nicole, does all of the work behind the scenes to give one young woman who has gone through tragedy a complete makeover with the funds used from Threadflip sales through Ruby, Inc.’s account.

As of this past week, Ruby, Inc. has received enough funds from the sales to style one young woman. In this process we hope to remind her that she is far greater and far more valuable than she realizes despite her adversity. We hope to make a difference to that one.
